Is there a deadline?
Yes, there are actually multiple deadlines. A multiphase timeline has been constructed to transfer our system from using WHMIS 1988 to using 2015. The timeline is split into three main phases with three deadlines. Phase one is to have all manufacturers and importers updated to WHMIS by June 1st 2017. Phase two is for distributors who must be updated to WHMIS by June 1st 2018. The third and final phase is for employers who must have WHMIS training by December 1st 2018*.
*When employees are using products labelled under WHMIS regulations Employees must have WHMIS training even before the 2018 deadline.
WHMIS regulations are enforced by Provincial WHMIS Authorities.
